For Amsterdam Art Week 2022, m.simons presents a solo presentation by Hans Hoekstra. The painter, based in Groningen, is a graduate from De Ateliers, won the Royal Dutch prize for painting and has had exhibitions at Drents Museum and Andriesse Eyck Gallery (online).
In his recent paintings, Hans Hoekstra finds his visual motifs close to home. From his studio in Haren, a village just south of Groningen, he paints what he sees around him; interiors, house plants and views.Groningen is often grey, flat and hoarse. That is exactly what Hoekstra bends to his will; the painter finds “suburban” visual motifs in Groningen and subsequently allows the liveliness and tension to come from the painting. The canvases are full of formal contradictions; a game of positive and negative space in a room fern, a realistic kettle with a cartoonish pair of tea glasses or a colorful shadow play on a white room table.
