De titel van Enrico Freitag’s tentoonstelling neemt ons mee in een kunsthistorische discussie en nodigt tegelijkertijd uit om ons onder te dompelen in zijn eigen relatie tot schilderkunst. “Schilder op weg naar het werk” is een schilderij van Vincent van Gogh uit 1888, dat vermoedelijk werd vernietigd tijdens een luchtaanval op Duitsland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Freitag zoekt een plek van verlangen op en betreedt een situatie die volledig is gewijd aan schilderen en de geleefde confrontatie als kunstenaar, ongeacht oorlog en crises, en die ook een verbinding heeft met de locatie van de tentoonstelling in Amsterdam.
About the Artist
Enrico Freitag (1981) studied Fine Arts at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. While still a student, he was a co-founder of Gallery Eigenheim, a place for contemporary art and communication, which is based in Weimar and Berlin today. In 2015 he followed a two-month residency in Amsterdam. In the same year he was awarded the scholarship for Fine Arts of the Free State of Thuringia.
In recent years, Freitag’s imagery has been characterized not only by art-historical references but also by current global events. The themes of work and productivity in particular, as well as the resulting environmental destruction and changes to our landscape, have been leitmotifs in his paintings, drawings and prints.
