During our international travels and exhibitions with The Gallery Club we meet amazing artists and photographers along the way. For our upcoming exhibition from 28-30 October at Sotheby’s Amsterdam we will present the (new) work of German visual artist Judith Stenneken and Chilean-British photographer Luis Lazo, which has never been shown in the Netherlands before. 

Instead of offering a (international) platform to Dutch photographers, we have are happy and proud to give that platform in the Netherlands to Judith Stenneken, whom we met in Los Angeles, and Luis Lazo, whom we met in Miami and have already curated exhibitions with in the recent past. Their work deserves to be seen and discovered by a Dutch audience.

Judith Stenneken
Judith Stenneken is a German artist working in photography, video and installation. She is based in New York City and Berlin. Stenneken holds a MFA in Photography, Video and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts New York (2013). She since had solo exhibitions with Galerie f5.6 in Munich (2016), Benhadj & Djilali Galerie in Berlin (2017), Flowers Gallery in New York (2018) and Marshall Gallery in Los Angeles (2022). She has produced two self-published photo books: LAST CALL (2010) – a project documenting the slow closure of Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport – and ILLUMINATE NATURALLY IN DARKNESS (2017) – a poetic dive into a state of transition. Her most recent body of work, a mountain is only a slow wave, will be released in 2022.

For the series that will be shown during The Gallery Club, she worked for more than ten years from various locations including Japan, the US, Germany, Austria, Greece and England. The work shows portraits, landscapes, architecture and abstract compositions. Stenneken made the series of exhibited portraits in collaboration with asylum seekers from Syria and Afghanistan who temporarily lived at the former Tempelhof airport in Berlin.

With her work, Stenneken investigates a constantly changing world and uses her photographic images to show how radical changes and acceptance can ultimately enrich our lives. She finds inspiration for her work in a variety of scientific and cultural sources; from Eastern philosophies to neuroscience and quantum physics.

Luis Lazo
Elements such as light, shadow, nature and landscapes are central to the work of the Chilean-British photographer Luis Lazo. With his poetic images, he captures personal memories as silent and fleeting moments.

Born in Chile and raised in the United Kingdom, Lazo lived in Miami and recently moved to Barcelona. He obtained a Diploma (with Distinction) in Arts and Photography from the Bournville School of Arts in 1988. In 1991 he obtained a 1st class Bachelor of Arts degree, Visual Communication Photography from the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom.

Before college, Lazo worked as a still photographer for feature films and worked on productions at Harper’s Bazaar, Premiere Magazine and The Telegraph. He also worked as a fashion photographer for the British GQ, So-In in Japan and Twill in Paris.

The Gallery Club has selected recent work for Lazo’s presentation, which will have its premiere during the exhibition at Sotheby’s in Amsterdam.
