We are happy to announce that Joppe Venema will present his new video installation, Negative Autoscopy, at WILLIE creative space, Schellingweg 15 in Zaandam. The festive opening will take place on Friday, November 29, from 7:00 PM until late. After the opening, the exhibition will be open by appointment until December 8.
Negative Autoscopy (2024) is a new video installation by artist Joppe Venema (Netherlands, 1998, participant at De Ateliers 2022–2023). The video installation features a single-channel video, accompanied by an interconnected and synchronized light program and light sculptures. Within the installation, electricity and radiation act as vital forces, with the wave of electrons enabling the blue light of the screen to function as performers outside the screen.
In the style of a survival horror game, the video explores how transparency through architecture, radiology, and technology advances the datafication of humanity to such an extent that one can no longer recognize oneself in the mirror—referencing the title Negative Autoscopy, a psychological illusory state.
Recent solo and group exhibitions of Joppe Venema’s work have been shown at ZERO foundation, Düsseldorf; Radius CCA, Delft; and De Ateliers, Amsterdam. Other projects include Vaneen, a publishing house focused on experimental artist books. Venema’s work will also be featured in upcoming exhibitions at the Cacaofabriek Helmond and Eenwerk, Amsterdam.
The exhibition marks the debut of WILLIE-creative space, a new raw, eclectic art space in Zaandam. WILLIE is a self-supporting venue that aims to foster a vibrant creative community. As part of the VZL Contemporary Art family, it will offer a unique platform for cutting-edge exhibitions and collaborations.
