    The Merchant House organizes two musical performances on Friday the 18th of October and Saturday the 19th of October. The Of Sound & Song concert series by pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama continues with Canadian-American violinist Shannon Lee. The program includes a seldom-played Sonata for Violin and Piano by Galina Ustvolskaya, dubbed “the lady with the hammer.”

    Shannon Lee has been praised for her “remarkable fire, impeccable intonation, and big, vibrant tone” (Gramophone). She has appeared as a soloist with orchestras such as the Tokyo Symphony, Antwerp Symphony, Belgian National Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, and New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Currently based in Amsterdam, Shannon is active as a soloist and chamber musician across multiple continents. In 2023 the Fontec label in Japan released a CD of Shannon’s dynamic recital program with pianist Jessica Osborne, with works by composers including Bartók, Takemitsu, and Brahms.

    For this event, De Appel invited Constanza Mendoza and Giles Bailey, who have been following the process around the exhibition My Garden’s Boundaries Are the Horizon closely, for a performative reading and conversation on January 24, 18:00–19:30. They are going to read the publication My Garden’s Boundaries Are the Horizon: A Porous Reader to Unguard the Garden and transform their interpretation into a collective event where the book serves as a score to be performed.
