Artist Maartje Jaquet worked for more than two years on her extensive project Ala Sma Tori about Keti Koti – the term that stands for the abolition of slavery on 1 July 1863 in Surinam and the Netherlands Antilles. She spoke with countless residents of Amsterdam Zuidoost, where she herself lives, to map out how they view this special day.

Jaquet made photographs, interviews, portraits in pen and watercolour and a large cotton canvas with statements about Keti Koti. Each of these statements is written down in a specially made ink. Ala Sma Tori refers to the stories (tori) of all kinds of people (sma). Together, the works provide a unique insight into how residents of Amsterdam Zuidoost deal with the past.

The exhibition can be seen in the Open Space of CBK Zuidoost, Heesterveld 35a, until 15 July. The opening hours are Wednesday till Saturday from 12 till 17h. Admission is free.
