In his new series of paintings, Ronald Zuurmond takes his research into the meaning of, among other things, form, colour and texture to a new level. For the first time, he leaves out all traces of figuration, but at no time does it leave us in any doubt that we are looking at his work, as evidenced by the characteristic layering, the sanding away of the paint and the structures in the surface.
Zuurmond talks about the music of the American jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, whom he admires. Jarrett said about his famous improvisation concert The Köln Concert from 1975 that the music ‘should go as fast as it comes’, with which, according to Zuurmond, he explains that his music has no ulterior motives, that only playing it gives it the right to exist.
“The paintings have value solely because they exist and do not want to argue or comment on anything”. This neutrality is emphasised by working in series; distinction between the works only exists in the viewer’s perspective, not in that of the artist.
