W139 warmly invites you to the opening of Taking Root Among the Stars! on the 22nd of November, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The evening will feature a special opening ritual by Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti, multimedia artist, healer, spiritual activist, and femme defender. Through her sonic and performative work, Ibelisse will weave together the multiple worlds of this exhibition – from the depths of the ocean to the edges of outer space. Join us as we launch the exhibition with colour-changing cocktails and an interstellar atmosphere!

After the opening at W139, the celebration continues at Nachbar, where a special playlist will play in the bar area, curated specifically for Taking Root Among the Stars.

Initiated by Müge Yilmaz and Anna Hoetjes, Taking Root Among the Stars is an exhibition featuring the work of artists and writers who use science fiction not merely as a theme, but as a speculative tool to envision alternative social realities, future possibilities, and shared connections with nature.

As a platform for exchange at the intersection of art, literature, ecology, science, and activism, this exhibition draws on speculation and its feminist potential. Led by works that are themselves platforms for exchange, the exhibition creates space for worldbuilding. Through initiating dialogue, reflection, and interaction with the audience, it invites us to imagine a radically different future – a future we look forward to rather than fear.

Featuring works by AiRich, Black Quantum Futurism, Maartje Folkeringa, Anna Hoetjes, Adriana Knouf, Brittany Nelson, Ada M. Patterson, Sondi, Müge Yilmaz, and Fei Yining.

About Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti
Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti is an Amsterdam-based multimedia artist working as a vocalist, composer, performer, and healer. Born in Bolivia and raised in Brazil, her sonic and performative practice is deeply inspired by her Latinx heritage. Her work is rooted in postcolonial justice, the paradox and beauty between grief and celebration, and the cosmology of the Andes as a source of reclamation, resistance, and resilience. Soundscapes become a way to speculate on myths, using word-oracles. A neo-mestiza, spiritual activist, femme defender, and moon lover, Ibelisse brings an intersectional and powerful presence to her art.
