Starting June 26, the Luther Museum Amsterdam, in collaboration with Stichting Kunsttunnel, presents the exhibition The Magical World of Lizzy Ansingh – art and influence of a visionary artist. On view through Sunday, September 21.
This exhibition celebrates the 150th birthday of Lizzy Ansingh (1875-1959), a pioneer in Dutch art history. The linchpin of the Amsterdam Joffers and a strategic networker, Ansingh broke barriers for women artists in a male-dominated world. The exhibition brings her multifaceted oeuvre, her influence and her hidden stories to life with over 30 paintings, tableware, poems and books, an interactive online translation of the exhibition elements and never-before-seen documents and photographs.
Lizzy Ansingh: a visionary with a network
Lizzy Ansingh grew up in the Lutheran Schwartze family of artists, where she learned the value of both art and networking. She was one of the first women to study at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten, along with Piet Mondriaan and others. As leader of the Amsterdam Joffers, a group of nine talented female artists, she used her social intelligence to promote their work. Through letters, photographs and a network visualization, visitors to the exhibition discover how Ansingh forged relationships between artists, critics and collectors.
Enchanting doll paintings and innovative projects by Lizzy Ansingh
Ansingh gained fame with portraits and still lifes, but it was her doll paintings that made her unique. Not playful scenes, but enigmatic scenes full of mystery and symbolism. Collaborations with Joffer Nelly Bodenheim are also featured, such as the humorous booklet “n Vruchtenmandje” and the porcelain “Family Kakelbont” tableware. These projects show Ansingh’s playful and enterprising side.
Experience Lizzy Ansingh – taste, smell, hear and see the world and time of Lizzy Ansingh
The exhibition is accompanied by workshops on portrait drawing and painting, lectures and music by female composers from the time of Lizzy Ansingh.
