BorzoGallery presents new work by Charlotte Caspers in an exhibition curated by Colin

Huizing, concentrating on the blue pigments ultramarine (lapis lazuli) and citramarine (azurite). For centuries both pigments were highly valued within the European painting tradition because of their rich colour and value. Ultramarine literally means ‘from across the sea’ and was used to indicate the blue pigment transported to Europe from Asia on Venetian ships. Citramarine means ‘from this side of the sea’ and was mined within Europe itself. Charlotte Caspers has a preference for pigments that have a special place in both the natural world and human history. In these artworks, the two blues jointly celebrate the beauty of nature and symbolize the desire to look beyond the horizon, aroused by the sea.
