From September 6 to October 19, Afroditi Terzi will be exhibiting at Galerie Fons Welters.
Afroditi Terzi (1991, Greece) lives and works in Amsterdam. She recently graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Her work sits at the intersection of textile techniques and painting. Terzi sews onto canvas in a manner reminiscent of automatic writing, with the final form only becoming visible once the canvas is stretched on the wall. She then applies paint to accentuate or soften the patterns drawn with the sewing machine.
Building on the idea that craftsmanship and the repetitive movements associated with it contain a wealth of abstract knowledge to be discovered, Terzi explores the literacy of hand sewing and stitching—traditions of the women in her family.
