In What the River Says, Surinamese artist Remy Jungerman explores cultural connections and spiritual practices within the African diaspora. This exhibition marks a shift from his earlier, more structured works, as Jungerman embraces a collage-like approach, incorporating textiles, kaolin clay, and wood. The resulting compositions are rhythmic, layered, and deeply rooted in his heritage, examining the intersection of Surinamese traditions and modernist influences. The exhibition will be on view at Galerie Ron Mandos from 28 September to 10 October 2024.
Jungerman’s use of kaolin, a material linked to Winti spiritual practices, plays a key role in the exhibition. His works, which include wall panels and freestanding sculptures, are shaped by this material, creating a dialogue between ancestral rituals and contemporary art forms. The exhibition invites viewers into a sensory experience, where cultural memory and spiritual symbolism are interwoven, bridging Surinamese and African diasporic traditions with global modernism.
