During Amsterdam Art Week, we dive deep into the female gaze in Amsterdam. From gallerists to artists, the spotlight is on women in Amsterdam’s contemporary art scene.
To be prepared: can you name five women artists?
We start the Tour at Galerie Onrust with Boudi Eskens and artist Petra Noordkamp. We continue the tour to the exhibition ‘Kinky Affairs’ by Mercedes Azpilicueta at Lumen Travo and to AKINCI, where we meet Lungiswa Gqunta. The tour ends at a special project at the Rijksakademie.
The event takes as its starting point the hashtag #5WomenArtists. Using the hashtag, the campaign calls attention to the fact that women have not been treated equally in the art world, and today they remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses. Amsterdam Art is pleased to say that 50% of the artists on show at our galleries are female.
