Amsterdam Art Week 2022: celebrate change

The tenth edition of Amsterdam Art Week will take place from 11 to 15 May 2022. Since the first edition in 2012, Amsterdam Art has been committed to strengthening Amsterdam’s position as a leading centre for international contemporary art talent. This reaches its pinnacle during Amsterdam Art Week. Together with 30 prominent galleries and a selection of museums, residencies and project spaces, Amsterdam Art presents a vibrant week full of openings, open studios, artist talks, debates, performances, film screenings and gallery tours. The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten is one of the most important centres for international, multidisciplinary and critically engaged talent in the city. As a key partner from the very beginning, the Rijksakademie’s Open Studios is once again an essential part of Amsterdam Art Week 2022.

Celebrate change

The anniversary edition comes after a difficult period of lockdowns and restrictive measures for the cultural sector. Ten years of Amsterdam Art Week (AAW) offers an excellent opportunity to celebrate, look back and especially look forward at the cultural sector. What are the major shifts in the Amsterdam visual arts field over the past decade? What is happening in the city and in other comparable cities in the Netherlands and abroad? What will the future look like?

One thing is certain: the city’s cultural ecosystem is constantly evolving. In the past decade the relationship between Amsterdam’s city centre and the city districts has changed significantly. All sorts of new art spaces have sprung up on the edges of the city, and more and more institutions have sprawled out of the centre. AAW 2022 explores these changing dynamics while bringing together art across the city. This edition zooms in on what these neighbourhoods have to offer and the bridges we are building between North and South-East, East and New-West, and other districts to the centre of Amsterdam.

Young galleries and innovative art initiatives

Amsterdam Art is convinced that a flourishing art climate in the city is stimulated by young galleries, new initiatives and new generations of art lovers and buyers. Based on this belief, AAW 2022 will launch a Young Section for young, emerging galleries and an Off the Beaten Track section for art initiatives that are outside the conventional categories. Each of these venues contributes in its own way to the diversity of AAW and acts as a springboard to discover new and exciting artists.

At the same time, the established galleries and institutions are also invaluable; they are rooted in the city, have built sustainable networks that provide connections to leading (inter)national art professionals. Amsterdam Art plays an active role in connecting these large and small, new and existing art institutions. During Amsterdam Art Week, we bring both the existing audience of professionals and culture lovers, as well as the art public of the future, in touch with the best of what the Amsterdam art scene has to offer.
