This year’s Amsterdam Art Week is proud to present a lineup of ambassadors with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, offering unique insights into the city’s vibrant art scene. We’re excited for you to meet our fourth ambassador, Jade Olieberg, whose artistic viewpoint promises to bring a fresh and creative feature to the art week.
Jade is a Dutch actress who made her acting debut in 2008 in ‘How Do I Survive Myself‘, based on the popular books by Francine Oomen. She is very passionate about arts and finds Amsterdam’s Art Scene to be truly one-of-a-kind as young creatives from all over the world congregate here. During Amsterdam Art Week, she is most excited about visiting the beautiful galleries and meeting new and interesting people.
It is interesting to know that Jade also enjoys writing. In fact, she revealed that she loves writing letters and has had pen pals all her life! However, a good friend of hers once used her letters in an artwork when she was still in art school, and since then Jade has been traumatised and never sent another letter to anyone.
Nevertheless, art has always been a big part of Jade’s life. She draws inspiration for her work from visual arts and gets immense comfort from film, photography, books, music, illustrations, performance art, paintings and theatre. She views art in the same way that believers view religion. Art does not only inspire her, but also provides her with courage and energy.
Jade always aspired to be an art collector and now proudly displays art pieces in her home. She was inspired by a previous co-worker, an opera director, who, from the age of 30, bought a beautiful work for himself and his friend every year. In fact, Jade’s partner is also a collector and has several photographs on display in their home. For those interested in purchasing art, she recommends visiting Foam, especially for buying photographs.
Jade believes that taking your time is a crucial aspect of experiencing art at its best. She advises not to rush, regardless of whether you have a short or long time to spend. When asked about the relationship between hospitality and the art world, she raised some insightful points: “For me, that means accessibility.” Jade believes that everyone should feel welcome in a gallery regardless of their art knowledge or purchasing power. By sharing information about art, we can enrich their experience and create a more inclusive art world.
In accordance with this year’s theme of Hospitality, all visitors are cordially invited to the participating art spaces during Amsterdam Art Week. On Friday June 2, starting at 16:00, the galleries will open their doors with new exhibitions and celebratory drinks for everyone to enjoy. We encourage you to take Jade’s advice and take your time to explore the galleries and to feel free to ask any questions you may have. Be sure to check out our full programme and mark your favourite exhibitions to visit during the opening.
