Michael Lange’s latest series “FLUSS” focuses on the Rhine River and the adjacent meadows of the Upper Rhine in the south of Germany. Between 2012 and 2014 he spent three years traveling the late fall and winter season at the break of dawn to photograph his motif.

“RIVER” is a consistent sequel to the WALD series: His cycle, once more, examines nature as he aims to find stillness in motion and order in chaos. Delicately enchanted wild meadows, alongside a massiv body of water forced into man-made canal are fathomless and yet deep. A new facet reviled is the mix between secluded and open landscape, the interaction between river, dense vegetation and the ever changing weather and water levels.

“To lose myself in situations and images, to indulge in the longing for stillness, is a major element of my artistic work. My works are intimate encounters. Emotion and ephemerality become manifested in them.”

With a consistent photographic language, Lange transforms landscape and detail, without losing touch with the motif. He perceives rain, fog and dawn as his allies. Lange plays with the elements, extreme weather conditions in their fleetingness. The images live on this tension: Seemingly harmless flowing waters only a moment later turn into roaring water mass, a calm surface adumbrates black shallows. The atmospherically dense images are enhanced by fine modulations in monochrome tones. The depicted, seemingly untouched nature appears magical and mysterious at the same time. Abstaining from any signs of civilization a timeless level is established.
