The opening of the solo show 'Notes and Letters' with works by the New Zealand artist Marie Shanon is on Sunday January 31st 2016. A concentrated formal presentation of two monitors on the wall with white text scrolling across black screens. But opposed to the distanced form is a very personal content.

What I am Looking At (2011) is a list of objects, ephemera and art works belonging to her late partner, Julian Dashper, that the artist considers as she catalogues the contents of his studio following his death in 2009. The text rolls up the screen, in the manner of movie credits, accompanied by a voiceover narration.
The Aachen Faxes (2012) is an edited selection of Julian Dashper’s correspondence to Marie Shannon when he was an artist in residence at the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen, Germany, in 1995. In his faxes to her he talks about being an artist in residence, the passage of time, love, cats and the weather.
A beautiful play between distance and nearness.
The two videos have not been shown together before, but are both part of a continuing series of text-based video works by Marie Shannon.

Marie Shannon (1960) lives and works in Auckland (NZ). She graduated Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland in 1983. She received a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council grant in 1989, and a grant from Creative New Zealand in 1997. She represented New Zealand at the Asia Pacific Triennale, Queensland Art Gallery in 1996 and also exhibited that year at the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney. In 1998 Shannon showed at the Govett Brewster Gallery, New Plymouth, and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne. In 2000 she was included in the exhibition ACProjects, New York, Five Shows, Five Curators.
Many of Shannon’s photographic series are focused on her immediate domestic environment; for instance her son’s building block constructions 50s lino; a stitched fabric collage of a Gordon Walters koru painting; photographs of her own childhood drawings. Shannon’s recent exhibition at Sue Crockford Gallery was a series of black and white photographs of the watercolours she painted of Donald Judd’s furniture at Marfa, where she stayed in 2001. In 2005 Shannon produced a suite of photographs titled ‘Love Notes’ which have been widely exhibited.
