Raymond Cuijpers, SELPORTRAIT AS A LIVING PAINTER, Van Zijll Langhout, VZL,

Initially I was a football player who painted. Then I was an ex-football player and coach who painted. Now I am a father who paints, and a father who cycles. I work at a bookstore and as a bike messenger in order to paint. The time I have to paint is scarce. And when I’m painting I think of my son and the mother of my child. Sometimes I paint with my son. His presence has opened up the paintings. And because of the limited studio time my concentration has increased and the process is more intense. The football playing teenager, the simultaneously disillusioned and happy twenty something, the man in his thirties subjected to intense changes and finally the increased understanding of my forties are all phases that shaped my consciousness which manifests itself now in the series of small paintings made from 2015 to the present. These often quickly constructed paintings can be read as visual diaries utilizing the language I developed in my early football works as a short hand to reveal the divergent layers of my present life. I'm always looking for the abstract, yet living image. Like the football player who operated on instinct, now a bike messenger maneuvering fluently through traffic, every day gazing in wonderment at my son and experiencing an absence when I'm not with my family, that’s how I paint now.
