Ryan Schneider, Infinite Leaves, 2015, oil on canvas, 122 x 91 cm

A solo exhibition by the American artist Ryan Schneider. Schneider makes figurative, colourful paintings that are immediately appealing.

Noteworthy is the way in which the works are established, namely outdoors in remarkable natural surroundings. Schneider lives and works in Joshua Tree in California, a place where two deserts meet, the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert. In his open-air studio he has to deal with exceptional weather circumstances as extreme heat, intense light and strong winds. This particular nature and natural forces are his source of inspiration.

The plants, people and animals that inhabit Schneider’s paintings have something mystical about them. It is then not so much a literal translation of nature that Schneider shows but a spiritual one: “For me, painting has always been a spiritual practise and, in my new (almost alien-like) surroundings, I felt like a conduit for the works that I created […] (as if they had been patiently awaiting my arrival in the desert in order to finally come to fruition).”

Through his paintings Schneider creates his own world and imbibes the viewer into it by combining recognisable elements and almost psychedelic colours. The sometimes fierce fluorescent paint works so hypnotic that the shamanic impact of his work is almost palpable.
Ryan Schneider (1980, Indianapolis, IN, US) lives and works in Joshua Tree, California. He studied Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute, College of Arts and graduated in 2002. Several solo exhibitions followed at for example Two Rams Gallery, New York and Richard Heller Gallery, Santa Monica, California. He had numerous international group exhibitions in among others: Munkeruphus Museum, Denmark, Coburn Projects, London, Bendixen Contemporary, Copenhagen, and Galleri Steinsland Berliner in Stockholm.
