Summer residency in the gallery Unfolding the Object artist Marieke Gelissen

If you unfold a handkerchief, you can see in it certain fixed distances and proximities. If you crumple it up, two distant points are suddenly close, even superimposed…, In Michel Serres en Bruno Latour’s Conversations on Science, Culture and Time (1995), they use the image of the handkerchief to illustrate notions of time and space. Using this image as a starting point Marieke Gelissen explores how the act of folding can be understood.

The exhibition consists of new works created during a two month research project which started the first of July, during a summer residency in the gallery in Amsterdam and grew during her subsequent residency in Ukiha (Japan).  How does the transformation of a flat surface into a 3D object create a new understanding of what space is? What is an object is and how are these notions interrelated? Gelissen transforms this question into physical encounters with objects and materials, and into performative acts (‘Handelingen’). She uses time as a medium,  pursuing a multidisciplinary experiment, including video, sound, sculpture and live performance.

The presentation of the summer residency will be 3 September.

Gelissen’s work is based on the constitution of meaning in human experience and relates to the primary role that sensory perception plays in understanding the world as well as engaging with the world as we know it. Following her graduation from Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2012 she has exhibitioned in the Netherlands in Amsterdam, Nijmegen, Rotterdam and Arnhem. Internationally she has exhibited in Berlin (D), Salisbury (UK) and Zürich (CH). In 2013 she received a talent grant from the Mondriaan Fund. In 2014 she realized her first work in public space, Parallel Paper Tunnel, in the underpass of the train station in Zürich, Switzerland. Gelissen has also been nominated for the Theodora Niemeijer Prize 2016, for emerging women artists.
