Galerie Ron Mandos proudly presents the solo exhibition The Monolith by Dutch artist Levi van Veluw.
Levi van Veluw (1985) is known for his multidisciplinary works that range from video to photography, drawing, sculpture and life size installations.
His development worked its way towards the all-encompassing installation The Relativity of Matter, which was set in the House for Contemporary Culture Marres, end of 2015.
Since his childhood Van Veluw has been fascinated by things that are theoretically possible but difficult to imagine. The fantasy of a surrounding with alternative laws of nature, a world with different logic and reason than ours is what interestests him. Ten years ago he became fascinated by the science fiction books by Fred Hoyle, Isaac Asimov and Aldous Huxley.
In his work Van Veluw often refers back to the fundamentals of these stories where science, technique and development of knowledge are being reevaluated.
"By creating an environment where everything needs to be redefined, the visitor loses his grip on reality. His senses and brain are overstimulated, emotions and feelings are accelerated. The visitor becomes hyperaware of his environment and simultaneously is invited to become a part of it."
Especially the psychological aspect of this process is what interests Van Veluw. By playing with the unrecognizable shapes and by placing the visitor in a disorganized environment you are detached from existing associations.
The Monolith is an extension of the installation The Relativity of Matter. In the middle of the room stands a perfect cube. Resembling a massive contruction, behind the dark walls an inventor, the artist, the maker is creating a new universe. He thinks, collects, organizes, arranges, creates, molds and polishes. The monolith is the source. Outside this core is an alternative reality that finds its roots in this 'laboratory'.
Recognizable elements from Van Veluw's previous work like the grids, geometric shapes, a desk or a surrounding are visible in different ways. Sometimes identifiable, sometimes estranged or fragmented, reconstructed in a new context. Project themes like chaos, order, disorder or estrangement, that Van Veluw researched in previous work, also return in these works in The Monolith.
