Simone Bennett is a visual artist who works with film, photography and prints. She is fascinated by common things that occur under the surface. A recurring theme in her work is the disruption of everyday life. Bennett uses the cinematic language to tell her stories, shining a light on dark places in society. For the exposition ‘You can’t wrap your arms around a memory’ Simone will show her latest film ‘Overvloed’ (Wealth), the film ‘Daughter’ and a series of staged photographs.

(Colour, high-definition video projection on a vertical screen in the middle of the gallery room 20 min., loop)
During the financial crisis in 2008, Simone had a dream about a crying chandelier slowly dissolving the floor beneath it. She decided to make a film based on this image. To achieve this goal Simone gathered a film-crew together with producer Sasha Dees and applied and received a funding from the Mondriaan Fonds. Peter Moll made the chandelier that ‘shines light’ and ‘sheds tears’ especially for ‘Overvloed’. Overvloed / Wealth is a 20 minute film-loop which addresses the issues of greed. The powerless feeling we experience while being stuck in a loop, not being able to let go of our never-ending hunger for individual prosperity over the well-being and welfare of society. The film represents the destructive cycle of accumulation and annihilation of the abundance of wealth.

SERIES OF STAGED PHOTOGRAPHS ‘You cant wrap your arms around a memory’
Simone’ photographs portrays people who seem to be detached from each other. The powerlessness of being stuck in your surroundings, not able to change the situation you are in. Longing to be together but looking the other way. The moment when we stand still, closing ourselves off to a world in which we don’t feel we belong anymore. The series reads like a film sequence where all the portrayed sing their own song. The locations chosen for the photographs are Simone’s direct surroundings and the people portrayed are her friends and family members.

Project room: DAUGHTER
Short HD film. ‘Daughter’ deals with the subject of having children. The overwhelming feeling of fear in combination with the deepest love when looking at your sleeping daughter. The daughter trusts, the mother is worried.
