LOST CODES is a project concerning the ephemeral notions of migration.

The work focuses on the mental transportation of things that had to be left behind. These things were once part of a life.  For different reasons they can no longer be part of the new life. Those things are not forgotten. They move in memory banks, they move with our personal archives and are part of our mental migration. Lost things, lost gestures, lost codes become new codes, as part of a collective immaterial migration. The idea of ‘nomadism’ defines people as not necessarily being connected to the place of their birth, but to the place where they are physically present. In our current age, nomadism is the new kind of nationality.  The process of migration has created a newer and perhaps a deadlier cohabitation of economics and ideology.

LOST CODES is about the unsolvable dialectic of presence and absence with our body as the medium of transcendence and materialization.

For this project Ibrahim Quraishi has invited different people who went through migratory processes. With them he explores their inner migration and their sense of belonging.  In LOST CODES the people move literally the lost objects, the lost codes and the lost gestures in space. LOST CODES thus becomes a choreography of physical memories and absent objects, connecting memories, spaces, journey’s and bridging the distance between the known and the unknown.
The work contains of a live performance installation with live video filming and a series of photographs.
We invite you wholeheartedly to the opening of LOST CODES at Galerie Lumen Travo Amsterdam.

LOST CODES has been researched and developed during an artist in residency at ArteEast New York and Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center New York. The first version of the project has been presented and co-produced by Galerie Crone Berlin.  The project has been generously supported by the Mondriaan Fonds NL.

Next to LOST CODES, Galerie Lumen Travo will present, a series of three M-Portraits, a series of multi - technique paintings on the topic of the classical Arab Patriarch as well as Quraishi’s most recent studies based on his visit to the Kurdish region of Iraq and Rojava in North Syria. These studies are inspired by the notions of resistance and are presented under the title of Martyrs and Idols. They are an homage to The Kurdish Woman’s Resistance Movement and the female/ male soldiers fighting Daesh (Islamic State) and the Syrian dictatorship.
