Philosopher Srećko Horvat has been described as “one of the most exciting voices of his generation.” His latest books include What Does Europe Want? (Columbia University Press, 2014) co-authored with Slavoj Žižek and Welcome to the Desert of Post-Socialism: Radical Politics After Yugoslavia (Verso, 2014). Within the framework of his new book The Radicality of Love (Polity Press, 2015) the Croatian philosopher gives a lecture on Wednesday 23th September at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten.

Horvat considers the 21st century as a narcissistic culture in which love is missing and sex hyper inflated, due to new technologies of the self (Grindr, Tinder, online dating, etc.). He asks himself what would happen if we could stroll through the revolutionary history of the 20th century and ask the main protagonists - from Lenin to Che Guevara, from Alexandra Kollontai to Ulrike Meinhof - seemingly naïve questions about love? A century were the most radical revolutionaries like Lenin or Che were scared of the radicality of love. What is so radical about a seemingly conservative notion of love, why is it anything but conservative and why is love so surprisingly absent in our current culture? Horvat gives a possible answer to these questions.
