Claire M Singer

There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make a silence, we cannot.
John Cage, Silence (1961)

At the early hour of 08:00 the Oude Kerk offers a meditative oasis in the city, along with an enervating sunrise through the high church windows. At this early hour you can experience the Silence music programme, a contemplative counterpoise to a hectic city centre.

The second edition of Silence is being held on Friday, 3 February, in the context of the exhibition by Marinus Boezem. The British composer and audiovisual artist Claire M Singer composed a new work for organ and electronics, using sounds from Boezem’s work, the Oude Kerk and the transept organ. Claire M Singer’s work encompasses acoustic and electronic compositions, installations, live electronics and organ sounds. Her work has been performed in galleries, in clubs and at festivals around the world, including XMV New York, Tate Modern, Union Chapel London, Fylkingen Stockholm and Muziekgebouw Amsterdam.

Music in the Oude Kerk

The Oude Kerk boasts an impressive musical history and in the 16th century was one of the first places in Northern Europe where audiences could enjoy public concerts. Pending completion of the Vater-Müller organ’s restoration, the Oude Kerk decided to make use of this period of quiet and think about a new programme of music. Based on conversations with musicians, artists and programmers, a music programme that conjoins with the Oude Kerk’s art programme and the context of a monumental building was launched in November 2016. The concerts in the Silence series always start at 08:00 and are frequently held on the morning of the first Friday of the month.

Admission: €10 / free for holders of a Museumkaart, ICOM card, I Amsterdam city card or stadspas, and for Friends of the Oude Kerk
