Amsterdam Art Week 2025 Open today from 10:00 to 18:00

17.30 – 21.00

During Amsterdam Art Week, Foam will present the first retrospective in the Netherlands dedicated to the work of Augusta Curiel (Suriname, 1873-1937). The exhibition will open on  Thursday 22 May.

With her sister Anna (Suriname, 1875-1958) as assistant, she ran a successful photography studio in Paramaribo, making Curiel one of Suriname’s most important photographers. The exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of the Curiel sisters’ work, with more than 100 images offering a rich cross-section of Surinamese society in the early 20th century. Augusta Curiel – Yere Mi Sten (translated from Sranan Tongo to Hoor Mijn Stem) highlights the multifaceted practice and unique position of Anna and Augusta Curiel in Surinamese society during the Dutch colonial period. The exhibition coincides with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Surinamese independence.

Make sure to visit the museum for this inspiring new exhibition and festive opening!
