Amsterdam Art Week and Artropolis have joined forces to create a new podcast series that explores the ecosystem of Amsterdam’s art world. In this series, interviewer, podcast producer, and art enthusiast Maaike Muis speaks with artists, curators, collectors, and gallery owners — the people shaping the city’s artistic landscape.
What drives today’s creators? What role does art play in a changing world? And how is Amsterdam’s art scene evolving in these times?
Artropolis is not a traditional art history lesson, but an open and accessible series of conversations for anyone interested in contemporary art — from seasoned gallery visitors to curious newcomers.
Episode 1: The origins of Amsterdam Art Week
The series begins with a three-part feature on Amsterdam Art Week, the annual arts festival that brings the city to life from 20 to 25 May with exhibitions, open studios, gallery tours, artist talks, and surprising events.
In the first episode, Maaike chats with Martina Halsema, Director of Amsterdam Art, and Willem Sijthoff, co-founder of the festival. Together, they look back at the origins of Art Week in 2011 and discuss how the event has grown into a key fixture on the Dutch art calendar.
They also share tips on can’t-miss highlights of the programme and practical advice for emerging collectors.
Hear art, don’t just see it
With Artropolis x AAW, we aim to make art not only visible but also audible. This podcast series offers a unique insight into the contemporary art world, directly from Amsterdam and in collaboration with the people who shape it every day.
The first episode is now available on all major podcast platforms.
