Bradwolff Projects proudly presents Es gibt keine Sahne, es gibt Krieg, a new project by photographer and visual artist Annaleen Louwes.
Opening Sunday 7 September | 16:00 – 18:00 Performance: Christina Flick, 16:30
Through this photographic exploration, Louwes explores the legacy of shame carried by her German mother since the aftermath of the Second World War. What began as a search into family history has grown into a personal exploration of intergenerational transmission, identity, and the power of memory.
The title refers to the stark confrontation between everyday life and the enduring scars of a war that transcends generations. Using images, audio, and archival materials, the boundary between fact and memory becomes blurred. What was told and how was this remembered? How does the story of a seven-year-old girl shape the life of her daughter?
Louwes combines photography with personal reflection, questioning how collective shame permeates the individual. At school, she defended her mother’s heritage while simultaneously trying to distance herself from her German identity. Her mother’s shame became her own burdena silent legacy that remains palpable.
This intimate and urgent narrative invites reflection on how we engage with the past – both that of our parents and our own.
