Julius Stibbe presents a series of recent paintings in his fourth solo exhibition, LIGHT, during Amsterdam Art Week 2025 at LANG. The official opening will take place during Festive Gallery Night on Thursday 22 May between 17:00 and 21:00. The exhibition runs until June 21.
The evolution of Julius Stibbe’s (1995, Amsterdam) work is embedded in his approach. He is constantly trying to find new ways to amaze and challenge himself. Julius experiments with different types of paint, acrylics and oils, working at times with thick layers of paint, other times with a lighter touch, and sometimes alternating between heavy blobs and thinner strokes within a single work. He also experiments with collage-like interventions. In short, he utilizes all the tools available to a painter. This method carries a risk: it could go terribly wrong. Sometimes, weeks, months, or even years of work are required on a canvas to reach a satisfying result. That struggle is visible in the works—whether they are small or large, they are exciting and encourage us to want to follow that struggle.
The depiction seems to have been entirely erased over the years, although, given the titles, it is not ruled out that a realistic setup is still the starting point for some works. The titles are then distant associations, where the viewer can simultaneously lose themselves in the image while observing it.
Still, despite these experiments, you can recognize a painting by Julius Stibbe from a distance. They do indeed have a kind of shared DNA, the hand of Julius is clearly visible. This is because, through the many different, sometimes dark brushstrokes, the works radiate a colorful light. And despite the sometimes heavy layers of paint, his message remains light. Light is ultimately the theme that connects all the works.
