A New Season and a New Guest! Madé van Krimpen presents Noah Kim Spaans. Opening on 13th September from 5pm to 9pm. The exhibition will be on view from 13th September to 12th October 2024.
We are proud to present Noah Kim Spaans (2002, Tiel, Netherlands). A recent graduate of HKU, Noah Kim is our third artist-in-residence at the gallery. Not only will Noah be working in our space, but their art also revolves around the concept of residual traces. From early September, Noah will be painting, stretching threads, and crumpling fabrics on the gallery walls, exploring the balance between a fixed and evolving identity.
Noah begins by randomly placing nails into the wall, almost by chance. Spaans attaches the fabric to these nails, and as the fabric becomes wet, it sticks to the wall and naturally drapes around the nails. This method allows the fabric to form its own creases and folds. Noah then adds a layer of acrylic paint to the fabric, continuing to explore how it moves and interacts with the space. “When I drape the fabric, I want it to follow its natural shape. I try to keep it simple by adding just one stitch or stretching threads to create tension” (Noah).
From technical to deeply personal, Noah has developed a unique way to express their inner thoughts and feelings. A recurring symbol in their work is the flower, representing the end of a chapter in their life—a symbol of who they once were. As these flowers wither and become fragile, they reflect Noah’s connection to the past: things change and fade, yet reveal a deeper beauty.
Come to the open studio to see the results of Noah’s work—dripping paint, structured fabrics, and spontaneous markings on the walls.
