Festive Gallery Night

During Amsterdam Art Week 2025, Galerie Bart will open on 22 May Marleen Sleeuwits‘ solo exhibition Re-Surface, an intriguing exploration of everyday interiors and their often unnoticed aesthetics. The exhibition invites visitors to take a fresh look at the spaces we inhabit every day.

In what places do we actually spend most of our time and how do we relate to them? In Re-Surface, Marleen Sleeuwits explores her fascination with suspended ceilings with which we are constantly surrounded. The material has a temporary and impersonal character and is often labelled as ‘ugly’ or ‘cheap’. In this new series of works, she explores the relationship between original, replica and photography. The presentation in neon-coloured Plexiglas containers makes you feel like you are looking at relics from the future.

The second part of the exhibition features the work Interior no. 72 to 74, which grew out of the cube-shaped installation Sleeuwits made in 2023 for gallery Sous les Etoiles in New York. The installation snaked through the space and was plastered with burnt photo prints of concrete and mirrors, making the structures seem to run on indefinitely. A mirror substrate gives the series an alienating effect, allowing the viewer to relate between different dimensions.

During Amsterdam Art Week 2025, experience a unique exhibition in which reality and illusion merge. Discover how Sleeuwits‘ work transforms the perception of everyday spaces!
