The young artist Gegee Ayurzana has just finished her two-year artist residency at De Ateliers in Amsterdam.

Currently she is working mainly on paintings unhinged from their traditional frames, paintings on (semi) transparent veils that seem free floating and boundless, reorienting our experience of real and imaginary spaces. The motives on these colorful, ghostlike appearances are related to the imagery and materiality of traditional folk culture in her homeland Mongolia. At the same time, her practice is a contemporary reflection on
issues brought up by radical modernist painting in the past, concerning the autonomy of art and its formal and symbolic values.
