15:00 – 16:00
On Friday 23 May, Galerie Fleur & Wouter will launch French artist Natacha Mankowski’s new book: Ritsona at 15:00. The book gives an insight into her research into remote marble quarries. This time, she focuses on a twin quarry north of Athens: the Ritsona quarry.
After researching the quarry and its surroundings, Mankowski began her characteristic working process. She collected souvenirs from the ground, including pieces of marble, pine cones, stones and other archaeological finds. Back in her studio in Amsterdam, Mankowski created her own oil pastels with these souvenirs, which she applies as paint or clay to her panels. These panels show bird’s-eye views and cross-sections of the quarry and the Ritsona area.
In the book, photographs and maps of the area come together in an exciting design with Mankowski’s working process and final artworks. The book makes us think about the commodification of nature, a process that produces urban development but at the same time encourages ecological degradation.
Make sure to attend this exciting book launch at Galerie Fleur & Wouter on Saturday 24 May!
